As part of our Discover Houseboating series, there's a contest at Discover Boating, and it's available for houseboats too!

You have a chance to win up to $10,000 just by submitting your videos or photos of how you got started into boating.


Here's an email press release with some of the contest info:

"I just wanted to give you a heads up that Discover Boating is launching a photo video contest and we would love your help promoting it to all of the boaters out there.

Basically, boaters across the U.S. are encouraged to submit videos and photos illustrating how they "Discovered Boating" for a chance to win up to $10,000 and to have their creation featured in a national advertising campaign for Discover Boating."

After he built a houseboat in 1960 as a high school kid, my husband has always dreamed of living on the water but the closest I've gotten to water advertures was either on a canoe or a pontoon boat.

For my 50th birthday four years ago, I came home from a family get-together and found my "present" on the coffee table: full-color photos of a 1985 Harbormaster 47!

We liked houseboating so much that after two seasons we upgraded to a brand new 52-foot Harbormaster, so now my husband teases that every other birthday we increase the length by five feet!

We do hope to retire to full-time live-aboard in the next 3-5 years. I've taken a skipper saver course and enjoy crewing as first mate for my captain!

Wow, what a beautiful surprise and an excellent 50th birthday present. Now I have to be careful that my wife doesn't read this post in case she's expecting a "bigger boat" for her birthday :)

It was about 15 years ago, and my brother in law had gotten himself a used houseboat. It was a 34 foot Nautaline model, and he had invited us for the day.

Naturally, an invitation to spend a day on a boat, especially a houseboat didn't go unanswered. We accepted, and that is where our love for houseboats got started.

The day went beautifully, and come night time, we were all sad about having to leave, and my brother in law suggested that we spend the night.

That was the deal breaker there, and we slept like babies. The water was calm, and the sounds of nature, and the gentle rocking put us into a deep sleep.

When we woke the next morning, we didn't want to get out of bed, yet we didn't want to miss the rising sun. Plus the smell of freshly brewed coffee was just too inviting.

We had found HEAVEN ON EARTH !!!

We have since bought are own houseboat, and have spent countless weekends enjoying what only houseboats can offer. Peace, tranquility, and an inexpensive way to get away from it all.

Gods country is everywhere, and houseboats just allow us to get out and enjoy and appreciate it.
