Where to Live on Houseboats in the USA?

Wondering where we can go about living aboard full time on a houseboat? Are there any states where a person can't live full-time on a houseboat?

Just wanting to be sure in order to decide where we buy our houseboat.

Thanks, Bonnie.

As to the areas where you can't live full time on a houseboat, I would have to say that "legally" the list of states is increasing. I think that the keyword is what constitutes "full-time" living?

Some areas only allow no more that 30 days at a time, others more, others less. A lot of people are doing it with using the "no see, no hear, no say" technique.

I know that the US Corps of Engineers are making it more difficult to accomplish it legally and above board.

Hopefully some of our readers will share and post comments about which states allow, or don't allow, full time houseboat living.

Lewis and Clark Marina in Yankton, South Dakota allows live aboards during the season (May 1 to Oct 15). Houseboats up to 50 feet can run from 3K to 4K for season and outdoor storage is available for $13.50 per foot of h/b during the off season. Full service maintenance is available on site.

I live on the Tennessee River (Pickwick Lake) and there are two marinas that allow live aboards. Grand Harbor and Aqua Yacht are full service marinas with water, AC and cable. 2 hours to Memphis or Nashville.

Where can I live on a houseboat in MA
by: Denita

I have always wanted to live on a houseboat but want to rent one first if possible to see if I like it. Does anyone know of places in Massachusetts? I would need a couple of bedrooms and unfortunately a place to park my car.

Thank you
