Leaky Houseboat Windows - how to fix or repair 1 leaking window out of 15.

Leaking Houseboat Windows - window leaks on house boats.

I have leaky houseboat windows, and how to repair or fix 1 leaking window out of the whole gang. I have a 1991 Patio Cruiser houseboat and have a constant window leaks problem.

There is no obvious leak from the outside, but there is certainly water inside the boat under the window. The paneling and frame are soaking wet directly under the window but I have resealed twice now with no luck.

Any advice?

The windows are relatively cheap aluminum frame sliders, and this is the only leak I have out of 15 windows.

Thanks, and I would appreciate any advice, Paul.

Well Paul, welcome to the houseboat forums, and I am sorry to hear about your problem with the window leaks.

I can understand how you feel as it is sometimes difficult to diagnose the where the water is infiltrating from.

I have previously had the same problem on one of our houseboats, and it was caused by the water backing up in the tracks, and eventually seeping its way over the window trim.

I have often found that many of the window frames have "drain openings" and if they are blocked or restricted, water can tend to back up and find its way into the boats interior.

You may have to take out the water hose, and have somebody spray the window, and you could carefully watch the path of the water penetration from the inside.

Now, I don't remember the exact window construction that you have, but possibly someone can share some tips or ideas on how to stop those pesky window leaks.

Lastly, hopefully some of our readers will share and post comments about fixing or repairing their houseboat window problems. Feel free to use the "Click here to post comments." link found near the bottom of this page.

Houseboat Leaks - window and roof water
by: Jim Richmond

It could also be a leak from your roof and the water is traveling along an internal beam to the window. I had a wet trunk on my car and after replacing all of the seals in the trunk I discovered it was my sunroof seal leaking and the water was traveling to the trunk before it showed itself. If you can remove the ceiling above the window you may find you have the same problem.

Houseboat window repairs for leaky windows
by: 42gibson

I've had several houseboats such as yours with the same window leaks. If their like the ones I've had there is a metal frame on the inside with screws holding the window together.

If it is, take the screws out and have someone on the outside to catch it after you take the inside trim off, and push it out. I use plumbers putty in tape form on the outside rim of the window and reinstall it.

I've used it on several boats and knock on wood, no repeat leaks. Happy Boating.
