Exporting or shipping a used houseboat overseas?

by Mike
(Apple Valley, CA)

How to export a houseboat overseas.

How to export a houseboat overseas.

I am interested in buying a used houseboat and having it shipped overseas to Norway as a vacation home in one of their beautiful fjords. Do you have any experience with exporting or shipping Houseboats, or can you guide me in the right direction?

I was thinking buying a used houseboat in Florida and having it shipped from there. But how would it be shipped as it surely does not fit inside a container...

Any help on how to ship, transport, or export a houseboat overseas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, Mike

Hi Mike, that's a question that gets asked often, and I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I have heard that you can get them exported overseas, however I don't exact details.

Because of our thousands of daily readers and visitors, hopefully some of our readers will share and post comments about their houseboat shipping exporting experiences.

Export and Not For Sale
by: Jon

Mike, I agree with Priscilla. Dream Machines is the best way to go for a onetime export as Norway is not an EU member state.

It is also important to note for others that where transporting a boat to the European Union is possible, the vessel may not be put on the market for sale. It requires CE Certification to be resold.

This is a straightforward process, but requires strict adherence to international build standards for all systems. This is often extremely costly.

There are testing protocols and large amounts of calculations (hydrostatics/hydrodynamics etc) required. This process is best utilized as design criteria for a new build.

It is very difficult to CE certify an existing houseboat as often not only are the systems not built to ISO Standards, but basic required equipment does not carry the CE mark.

Some vessels may be grandfathered in if they pass certain safety criteria, but combustion engine emissions and exhaust noise, grey water, bilge bumping and electrical service differences often make this approach just as prohibitive.
